Pompei Italy

The historic city at the foot of Vesuvious destroyed in the 79AD, when the volcano eruption covered it by ash and lapillus. The first archaeological explorations took place in the middle of the 18th century, however it took until the middle of the 19th century for it to become an organized and systemised operation. It is estimated that three fifths have so far been brought to light. Without any doubt, this is one of the most famous archaeological site in the world able to offer a complete and precious picture of Roman life.

The city, with its elliptical plan, was divided by streets that intersecting themselves formed a net-shape. Houses predominately consisting of two floors with internal gardens and courtyards, were covered with drawings and paintings of the highest quality. The Forum, a big rectangular square, represented the centre of religion, politics and finance. There are two theatres: the Small Theatre built between 80-75BC where auditioning and mime took place; the Big Theatre built in the Hellenistic period (200-150 BC) with a capacity to hold 5.000 spectators.

The biggest thermae in the city were the “Thermae Stabiane”, built in the Samnite period and rebuilt in the Imperial age. The stucco decorations, from the Flavian period, represent one of the most impressive example of this sort.

Between the various noteworthy houses, La Casa dei Vettii is one of the most interesting examples of wealthy merchant life.
La Villa dei Misteri perhaps represents one of the most important buildings in Pompei due to a series of paintings decorating the Sala del Grande Dipinto, dating back to the 1st century BC.
Other buildings worth our attention are: La Casa di Menandro, La Casa di Loreius Tiburtinus, la Casa degli Amorini dorati, la Casa del Fauno, la Villa di Diomede, l’Anfiteatro.

Vesuvious Italy

The only active volcano in Europe. Now it is in a state of rest after the last eruption, in 1944, characterized by rivers of lava and emissions of ashes and lapillus.

There most comfortable directions towards Vesuvious are from Torre del Greco, Herculaneum and Bosco Tre Case. Once reaching the highest point, following some footpaths, both of the Bay of Naples and the Bay of Salerno are visible.

8 HOURS OF POMPEII

After a 3 hours ride we will get to the unique Pompei town.

Overwhelmed by the eruption of the Vesuvius in the year 79 A.C. the city of Pompeii has for centuries captivated archaeologists from all over the world.

Digging slowly and regularly since 1748 until the discovery of Temples, Theatres, homes completely fixed in their action when they were submerged by the volcanic flood.

The historians have now made the city completely returned to the light.

This will give you the best opportunity to discover the greatest witness of the way of life. at the times of the Roman Empire.

The Theatre of Pompeii The Theatre of Pompeii.

The theatre could hold 5000 spectators. Built in the Samnite period during the second century B.C., it underwent several reconstructions. The seats of the ordinary spectators were located inside the cávea, the wider seats at the bottom with comfortable chairs were for important personalities, while the two lateral boxes over the entrances of the “orchestra” were reserved to very important people.

Atrium of the House of the Faun Atrium of the House of the Faun.

“The House of the Faun” covers an entire city block. Its size and elegance are extraneous to the mediocre surroundings of Campania, but it is rather comparable to the princely residence of Pellas in Macedonia. It takes its name from the discovery of a small bronze statue (a dancing Faun) found in the atrium.

House of the Large Fountain House of the Large Fountain.

This niche-shaped fountain is completely covered with refined mosaics, composed of glass paste. In the “House of the Large Fountain” there are some copies of bronze statues representing a putto with a dolphin and a fisherman.

The Thermopolium The Thermopolium.

It was an ancient tavern. The presence of numerous shops, taverns, and inns, let us suppose there was a production not only for the requirement of the city, but also destined for the exportation.

The Arch of Caligola The Arch of Caligola.

It is so called because of the discovery of an equestrian statue credited to this emperor. The Arch of Caligola is located near the Forum (the main square of the town) along Via di Mercurio street. The Roman emperor Caligola lived from 12 to 41 AD: we don’t know so much about him because the texts by Tacitus about him were lost in ancient times.

Ruins of Pompeii by night Ruins of Pompeii by night

A moonlight walk among the history of two thousand years ago. The excavations of Pompeii are also open after sunset, thanks to a fixed lighting system which allows a unique, fascinating visit of one of the most beautiful archaelogical sites in the world.
